Using Indian Herbs for healthy hair

This has been an interesting process. I have tried Shikakai powder, Amla powder, and Brahmi powder.

It takes some experimenting. It feels weird, very, VERY weird. Imagine going out in the yard and grabbing a handful of dirt adding water to it, until it becomes a thick paste and adding this mixture to your wet hair. NOT A PRETTY PICTURE!

What I will tell you is its worth the effort. It feels wrong when you add it to your hair, its gritty, muddy and doesn't foam. You want to be sure to put it mainly on the scalp area, and don't pay so much attention to the ends (they will get the necessary cleansing when you rinse it out), massage it gently into your scalp and then rinse. Rinse like the dickens. When you think you have rinsed enough, rinse some more. When you think it's all rinsed out, rinse it again, otherwise, you will end up with grit in your hair. It's not a huge ordeal (if you have dark hair, but I do imagine if you have light hair, you will have a mess).

What you get when your done, is super soft, very clean hair with no perfumes or chemicals.

I have long hair, about to the middle of my back. Here is what I use;

2 TBLSP of Shikakai
2 TBLSP of Amla
8 oz of HOT WATER (not boiling, but hot from the tap)

I mix these things together till it makes a thick to medium thin paste.

I wet my hair, add the mixture to my hair, massage gently into my scalp and then let the rinsing begin.

It's a very inexpensive way to wash your hair, but it feels amazing.

I purchased mine from because I have not been able to find an Indian Grocery store in my area, but I hear they are cheaper than Amazon when buying. But even from Amazon, it's very inexpensive.

The mixture I use may not work for everyone. I did a lot of experimenting. I have Mitti and Brahmi, but I don't use them very often. I use the Mitti which is Fullers Earth, if I have used Coconut oil prior to washing as this will get the oil out, the Brahmi, I haven't found it changes anything, so leave it out for the most part. One day I may find a use for it, but as of now, I omit it from my usual regimen.

Have you ever tried it? Let me know what you thought. Do you have questions, let me know I'd be happy to help.

Have a great week!

Peace, Love and all things Gritty!
